Surveys about Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy Published

EVANSTON, IL—January 3, 2014—Results from two consumer surveys conducted by Versta Research were published this past November in The Patient, a peer reviewed medical journal that publishes original research from patient-centered studies. The published article was a collaboration between Versta Research, Inc. and Pfizer, Inc. based on research done in 2012 with the American Chronic Pain Association (ACPA).

The article illuminates critical communications gaps between people with diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) and healthcare providers. The published study involved a survey of 1,004 U.S. adults diagnosed with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes who experience symptoms of diabetic peripheral neuropathy, and another survey of 500 healthcare professionals in clinical practice who treat people with diabetes, including 250 generalist physicians (family/general practice and internists), 150 specialist physicians (endocrinologists, neurologists, pain medicine specialists and podiatrists), and 100 nurses and physician assistants (including 30 non-prescribing RNs).

“We are always pleased when the research we do for clients goes this far, and when it is used, published, and disseminated in so many ways,” said Joseph Hopper, president of Versta Research and co-author of the article. “It is a testament to our approach, and a testament to our clients’ willingness to think broadly about commissioning research that is credible, authentic, and rigorous.” The research has been featured by both ACPA and Pfizer on websites and in educational materials for patients, and last year it was presented at two scientific conferences on diabetes and pain.

The article is entitled “Painful Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy: Results of a Survey Characterizing the Perspectives and Misperceptions of Patients and Healthcare Practitioners” and is available for free download. Additional information about the survey can be obtained from the ACPA website and from
